MUPPET MODNESDAY: Behemoth aka Gene (16×20)

Can you tell I have a hard time adhering to a schedule? One of these days, Muppet Monday will actually fall on a Monday again.

(The smart phone is a nice toy that I am thiiiiiiis close to getting – finally contemplating quitting on my flip phone – but nothing beats a photo from an honest-to-goodness real life camera. My Nikon is dead and I can’t find the charger. Eff me.)

You may have seen this Muppet monster from time to time over the years. Behemoth has been a background character since the earliest days of the Muppet Show, when he had at least one segment of his own (before his eyebrows grew in). Over the years, he was furry wallpaper in many group shots, but his inconspicuous prominence seems to be growing with the impending release of Muppets Most Wanted.

In the last The Muppets, he was one of the telephone operators during the Muppets’ telethon. In the new movie, he appears in the trailers for a hot minute, most notably an ensemble scene with Ricky Gervais.Screen Shot 2014-01-28 at 5.09.33 PM Look at that screenshot. Even the most pedestrian Muppet fan can name every single character in that shot… except Behemoth (who is apparently now sometimes referred to as “Gene”). If that’s not an A-list rub, I don’t know what is.

I have to admit I didn’t even know either of this dude’s names. He was just the big yellowy-orange monster I could only see on freeze frame. But he looks awesome. So playful and cute in a big dumb, dopey way. Like a chocolate lab with a lazy eye or two. I think he’s poised to be the next Muppets breakout star, right there with Bean in the early 80s or Pepe in the 90s.

In conclusion, fuck Clifford.
